Host the National Work Zone Memorial at your next event
Save lives by making roadway safety personal through the virtual or in-person memorial
The National Work Zone Memorial makes roadway safety personal by inscribing the names of people killed in work zone incidents. Each person left behind loved ones and co-workers who grieve the loss.
Members can help raise awareness of the toll of work zone incidents by hosting the tribute formally known as “The National Work Zone Memorial - Respect and Remembrance: Reflections of Life on the Road.”
“The Memorial was unveiled in April 2002 during a National Work Zone Awareness Week event and traveled to this year’s national kickoff in Michigan,” ATSS Foundation Director Lori Diaz said. “The physical size of the Memorial and the more than 1,500 names on it have an impact when people see it in person so we encourage ATSSA members and public agencies to utilize it at their events. The Memorial is a visible reminder of the cost of work zone incidents and helps save lives by educating motorists to drive safely in work zones.”
The Foundation encourages ATSSA members, ATSSA chapters, state departments of transportation (DOTs) and industry leaders to host the Memorial at events. It is now available in two formats – a traveling Memorial and a virtual Memorial.
The traveling Memorial goes to communities across the country throughout the year and can be utilized in a variety of ways:
- Use it as a backdrop during a roadway safety industry event.
- Invite families that have lost someone to view the Memorial and share their stories.
- Display it at local press events.
- Host it at state advocacy days.
- Display it at state welcome centers.
The virtual Memorial was created for times when the traveling Memorial is not available or when meetings cannot be held in person. The 30-minute video can be played:
- During meeting breaks
- During lunch periods
- As attendees wait for a meeting to begin
- In a booth at a trade show
- On a monitor at a roadway industry event.
In 2021, ATSSA is partnering with The Foundation to cover the hosting fee for up to five public agencies. The agencies must be holding a media event and not have previously hosted the traveling National Work Zone Memorial.
